Welcome to wrestlingplan.com. (Salamone's Wrestling Plan for the Jiu Jitsu Man).

Wrestling techniques and principles lend themselves well to the martial arts. This is particularly true with regard to takedowns and takedown defense but also with a number of movements and positions while down on the ground.

In this instructional series, my goal is to provide instruction on wrestling technique primarily as it's applicable to the martial arts; that is, to supplement your stand-up and/or submission skills. It will be helpful if you have some background in wrestling technique but that is not required. More than just instruction on specific techniques, however, my goal is also to instill an understanding of principles of position and movement in the execution of wrestling technique. There's an expression, "If you know where you're going, you're more likely to get there." An understanding of exactly what you are trying to accomplish-and why-at any given phase of the execution of a technique will help tremendously on increasing the probability of a successful attacking or defensive maneuver. So, while I will be demonstrating technique, as is the focus of many wrestling instructionals, I will be emphasizing what I hope are useful concepts to help you build a conceptual framework with which to understand and build your technical base.

The techniques and concepts of this instructional series will be in the form of a number of modules covering, more or less, specific positions, techniques, and concepts, hopefully logically grouped, that will cover all of the so-called basic seven concepts of wrestling. I did have to make a choice, however, in the organization of technique and chose to make groupings of technique primarily from the end point of the technique rather than from it's beginning. So, for example, instead of grouping techniques by a particularly set up-such as the collar tie-and, from that point, discussing and demonstrating a number of different techniques that are derived from that specific set-up, the organization of the modules is centered around the end point technique-such as the head inside single leg takedown-with various set-ups demonstrated together to get to that endpoint. On the other hand, this series is designed in a manner that the concepts and principles emphasized will frequently cut across such groupings and, for example, some movements and positions on your feet will be quite applicable on the mat. Understanding these various concepts will allow you to better integrate what is more unique to wrestling into your martial arts.

Instructional DVD's and videos are, no doubt, an efficient way to become exposed to a multitude of techniques, tactics, and strategies by various individuals from different approaches and backgrounds. Instructionals can supplement but not replace good live group or one-on-one instruction as they cannot give you feedback in your attempts to learn how to wrestle. For that, I strongly recommend that you seek out a competent wrestler and include them in your training regimen. Additionally, my way, of course, works best for me; I definitely have my biases in this regard which I will be expressing. Of course, there is more than one effective way to attack, for example, a head inside single or double leg takedown and in showing you the way I think about wrestling technique is not to say there are not, also, other good approaches. Hopefully, you will be able to take what is useful from this instructional series for your body build, style, etc. I hope that you find this instructional series of benefit in your training.
